Where can we find more information on EFT? [for Couples]

Emotionally Focused Therapy [EFT] is a type of psychotherapy that is based on a humanistic, experiential approach. It integrates our understanding of attachment through to adulthood with our intimate partners. It has been extensively researched and proven to be effective with couples from all backgrounds. This approach was developed by Sue Johnson, a clinical psychologist, in the 1980s and still holds its effectiveness today.

As this is the method of couples therapy I practice, I often suggest that couples read Hold Me Tight, Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love  (2008), the book by Sue Johnson. I have linked the book; however, you can always order a copy of this book from your local library. I have also linked The Hold Me Tight Workbook: A Couple’s Guide for a Lifetime of Love by Dr. Sue Johnson. This is a companion to the Hold Me Tight book and could be additionally helpful, but you do not need to review both.

Another interesting book by Sue Johnson is her book Love Sense: The Revolutionary New Science of Romantic Relationships. This book goes into the science of love and how our bond is created. Also a great read to learn more about attachment and emotional bonds.

“If I appeal to you for emotional connection and you respond intellectually to a problem, rather than directly to me, on an attachment level I will experience that as “no response.” This is one of the reasons that the research on social support uniformly states that people want “indirect” support, that is, emotional confirmation and caring from their partners, rather than advice.”
